Sometimes, the smallest things can make the biggest difference. As someone embarks on their journey of grief, receiving a sympathy care package can mean a great deal.

It does not have to be large or extravagant—it’s truly the thought that counts. If you want to purchase many items or a more elaborate gift box, consider working with a group to defray the cost.

In this article, we have compiled five ideas to help you create a thoughtful sympathy care package that is sure to be appreciated.

Grocery items

When grieving a loss, the last thing anyone wants to worry about is grocery shopping and making dinner. By including some easy-to-make food items and snacks in your package, you can save your bereaved friend from the stress of meal planning and cooking. If you know the family’s food preferences, create a customized care package to suit their tastes. If you don’t know what they like, that’s okay too. Opt for simple, conventional items that almost everyone can use. Good non-perishable choices might include canned soup, tuna fish, cereal, nuts, peanut butter, granola bars, coffee, cookies, oatmeal, pasta, and tomato sauce. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always a smart, healthy choice. If you know they have room in the fridge or freezer, add a loaf of bread, lunchmeat, cheese, eggs, dairy, and/or some frozen entrees.

Remembrance gifts

You might choose to create a poignant care package that includes special keepsakes that will help the bereaved keep their loved one close. Some simple yet thoughtful memorial gift ideas include remembrance candles, journals, a photo album or scrapbook to preserve special memories, and/or a picture frame for displaying their favorite photo of the departed.

Presents for the kids

Children sometimes get lost in the shuffle of grief. There’s a whirlwind of activity going on and amid the chaos, they can easily get left out. Rest assured however that little ones feel the loss as much as adults do. Keep them in your heart and mind with a special care package. Consider age-appropriate items, but you might want to include a children’s book with meaningful messages about grief, craft kits, coloring books and crayons, comforting stuffed animals, puzzles, games, and toys to keep them occupied.

Baked goods

Comforting treats can be especially welcome when the world seems challenging. Buy or make a basket of indulgent freshly baked items for your friend to enjoy. Pastries, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and the like are all delicious choices. Add in some special teas or flavored coffees to accompany the assortment of delicacies.

Toiletries

Everyday grooming items like cosmetics and toiletries tend to disappear in no time. When someone is grieving, they may not be up to making a special trip to the drug store or supermarket for these necessities. Adding some toiletries to your grief care package can be very helpful. Useful items include shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, a toothbrush and toothpaste, toilet paper, tissues, hand soap, hand sanitizer, and razors.
